Shubman Gill, India’s captain, hinted that the country could select two spinners in the second Test of the present five-match series against England. This means that Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin would be included in the contest at Edgbaston.
He pondered on the opening game of the series and felt that things could have turned out quite differently if Ravindra Jadeja had bowled with another spinner.
Shubman Gill also mentioned that an extra spinner would have been useful in limiting the flow of runs.
“The last match could have been improved if we had an extra spinner in the fourth innings. There were some areas on the wicket that may have been exploited. When Jaddu [Ravindra Jadeja] bhai bowled, opportunities were created. We also believe that spinners are more effective at containing runs than quick bowlers, particularly when the ball is old. “It becomes extremely difficult if you don’t take wickets,” said Gill.
He also discussed the optimal amount of batters a team should have to enhance its batting depth.
“I assume you would want batting depth till No. 7, and maybe No. 8 can hit a little bit. Taking 20 wickets is difficult if you move up to No. 9. If we can field four or five great bowlers and bat until No. 7 or 8, that will be a strong combination’, he continued.
In India’s series opener, Jadeja did not have the greatest of days with the ball as the team lost by five wickets. It was only the second time in his Test career where he bowled more than 20 overs in both innings and only took one wicket.
