Shubman Gill exuded confidence after being the first Indian captain to win a Test match in Edgbaston, Birmingham. The Punjab batsman led India to their long-awaited maiden win at Edgbaston, after losing seven and drawing one of their prior matches with England at the famous site.
After India won by 336 runs, Shubman, who led from the front in the Test, scoring 269 in the first innings and 161 in the second, looked for his “favourite journalist” who had reminded him of India’s forgettable record at Edgbaston ahead of the second Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
“I cannot see my fave journalist. Where is he? “I wanted to see him,” Shubman Gill remarked at the post-game press conference.
Shubman stated that he does not believe in history and statistics. Instead, he asserted that this is the best Indian side to have visited England.
“I even stated before the Test match that I don’t particularly believe in history or statistics. We’ve played nine matches in the last 56 years, with different teams coming here. I believe we are the best side to have come to England, and we have the potential to beat them and win the series from here. If we continue to make the right decisions and fight, I believe this will be a series to remember. I believe I stated this before the game as well: this Indian side is one of the greatest to have visited England. “The best 16 are chosen to play for the country,” Shubman explained.
Shubman also mentioned that this is the best Indian team to have toured England, and the bowling attack has the ability to take 20 wickets, with or without the talismanic Jasprit Bumrah.
“I believe all our bowlers have the ability to chip in at any time and help us take 20 wickets. Definitely, Jasprit bhai is one of the best bowlers in the world. But regardless of that, any bowling unit of ours can take 20 wickets anywhere – and this was an example of that,” Shubman said.
The five-match series is all square at 1-1, with three more games left to be played. The third Test is scheduled to be held at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, starting from Thursday, July 10.
