Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott lauded Indian skipper Shubman Gill, calling him a “world-class player” with a promising future, after he shone once more against England, reaching his second consecutive century in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
Trott emphasised Gill’s strong awareness of how to confront bowlers such as Brydon Carse and Chris Woakes, stating that the young captain has devised particular plans to defeat each of them.
According to Trott, Shubman Gill’s ability to adapt and plan distinguishes him from other players.
“Carse possesses a bit more pace than Chris Woakes, but Gill’s ability to neutralise both is amazing. He knew Woakes will try to assault the stumps, and with no express pace, Gill devised a technique to deal with it — not something he came up with on the day, but one clearly planned well in advance. “This is what distinguishes good players from average ones, and world-class players from the rest,” Trott remarked on JioHotstar.
“Having the confidence to carry out a plan that isn’t entirely textbook, but offers you an advantage over the competition, is impressive. As captain, this has a huge impact not only in the midfield, but also on those watching from the team balcony. His body language and the manner in which he scored runs were particularly notable,” he continued.
Trott further added that Gill’s composed body language and confidence at the crease serve as a big booster for the rest of the Indian team.
“His control against the English bowlers sent a message to the dressing room — that he was taking charge, leading from the front. His intent was clear: ‘I’ll be there, I’ll be not out, and I’ll resume tomorrow. I’ll make sure we get into a winning position.’ Very impressive from such a young man — a world-class player with a bright future,” Trott concluded.
Speaking about the match, India ended Day 1 at 310 for 5, with Gill unbeaten on 114 and Ravindra Jadeja on 41 at the crease.
