Shubman Gill, India’s captain, is on the verge of shattering several world records set by the famous Sir Donald Bradman, some of which have held for nearly 100 years. Gill has now scored 585 runs in the first two Tests of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy against England, putting him on track for a historic series.
In the second Test at Edgbaston, he made 430 runs (269 in the first innings and 161 in the second), breaking various records in the process. These include surpassing Virat Kohli for the most runs by an Indian captain in a single innings, breaking Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the most runs by an Indian in a Test match, becoming the first Asian captain to score a double century in SENA countries, and becoming the first player in the world to score a double century and a 150 in the same Test match.
With three Tests remaining in the five-match series, Gill is only 225 runs shy of matching Bradman’s 810 runs as captain in the 1936-37 Ashes series.
Notably, Bradman and Shubman Gill are accomplishing these accomplishments in their first series as Test captains.
Bradman had three hundreds and an average of 90 in five Tests during the series, while Gill had already matched the three-century mark in just two games. Another milestone within sight is Bradman’s 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes series, the most ever scored in a single Test series, with Gill behind by 390 runs. Incredibly, Gill’s 585 runs in the first two Tests outstrip Bradman’s 394 in the first two matches of that famous 1930 series.

Bradman also holds the record for being the fastest to 1000 Test runs as captain, reaching the mark in just 11 innings. For Gill to break that, he would need 415 runs in his next six innings. Additionally, Gill is eyeing the record set by West Indies great Clyde Walcott, who scored five centuries in a single series against Australia in 1955, the only batter to achieve the feat.
Bradman himself had scored four in a series against India in 1947-48. With three centuries already, Gill is just two short of equaling Bradman and three away from matching Walcott.
Gill is also nearing several Indian milestones. He needs 148 more runs to surpass Sunil Gavaskar’s 732 run-tally for the record of most runs by an Indian captain in a Test series (1978–79). He is just 18 runs shy of overtaking Rahul Dravid’s 602 runs, the most by an Indian in a Test series in England. Additionally, he trails Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 712 runs, the most by an Indian against England in any Test series by 127 runs. He also needs only 91 more runs to surpass Virat Kohli’s 655 runs as Indian captain against England.
