Cameron Green, Western Australia’s premier all-rounder, developed low-grade side discomfort, forcing him to miss the whole ODI series against India in order to recover before the team’s next Sheffield Shield match against South Australia, which begins on October 28.
Australia chose Marnus Labuschagne as Green’s replacement in the squad for the three one-day internationals against India, which begin on Sunday, October 19, at Perth Stadium. The right-handed hitter will leave Adelaide following the Sheffield Shield match on Saturday night to join Australia’s team.
Green had only recently returned to bowling in competitive cricket after back surgery last year, and he skipped the T20I tour of New Zealand to play in Western Australia’s opening Shield match against New South Wales in Perth last week.
The Perth native was scheduled to bowl eight overs in the match, but he only bowled four and took one wicket. Cricket Australia’s medical department did not clear Green to bowl on consecutive days because Western Australia were unable to bat long enough in their first innings to allow him a full day’s respite between four-over intervals.
Cameron Green wasn’t expected to bowl in the ODIs against India.
He would have only played the first two matches before being rested for the third. He was also not going to play the subsequent five-match T20I series, participating in Sheffield Shield matches instead.
The Aussies have been struggling with injuries ahead of their white-ball series against India. They are already missing the services of skipper Pat Cummins. Josh Inglis is also ruled out of at least the first two matches.
Meanwhile, Adam Zampa is missing the Perth ODI as he is on paternity leave. Moreover, Alex Carey has also decided to play in the Sheffield Shield match between South Australia and Queensland in Adelaide as part of his Ashes preparation. The wicketkeeper-batter will also miss the ODI series.
Labuschagne, who was dropped from the ODI side due to a run of poor form for over 12 months, has made a comeback after registering four centuries in five domestic innings. The 31-year-old has 1871 runs from 66 ODIs at an average of 34.65, including 12 fifties and two centuries.
