India had a strong start on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. Already in a strong position following captain Shubman Gill’s historic 269 and a spectacular Day 2 bowling performance, India’s great pacer Mohammed Siraj dismissed Joe Root and Ben Stokes in consecutive deliveries in only the second over of the day.
The right-arm seamer first dismissed the veteran English hitter, Root. Siraj bowled from around the wicket and lured Root with a delivery on the leg stump line.
The ball drifted late and hit the edge of Root’s bat, landing safely for Rishabh Pant. The former England skipper walked off for 22.
Stokes, playing his first ball, was smacked by a short-pitched delivery outside off. The England captain got a slight edge on it, giving Pant another catch behind the stumps. Notably, Stokes scored his maiden golden duck in Test cricket. Jamie Smith, who faced the hattrick ball, pushed the delivery down the ground for a boundary.

England on back foot early on Day 3
Meanwhile, Day 2 of the Test match belonged to India, first with the bat, thanks to Gill’s double-century, and then with the ball. Akash Deep, who replaced Jasprit Bumrah in the playing XI, made an impact late on Day 2 with two wickets in two balls, before Siraj had Zak Crawley caught at slip.
With the visitors now already sending five English batters back in the pavilion, they will be confident of dismantling the tail soon. At the time of writing, England’s scorecard read 109/5 with Harry Brook (42*) and Jamie Smith (14) at the crease and are trailing by 478 runs.
