After playing a key part in her team’s first-ever Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 victory on Sunday, October 20, 24-year-old Amelia Kerr of New Zealand earned a tonne of praise from her skipper Sophie Devine.
In the finals versus South Africa at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, Kerr’s outstanding all-around performance for New Zealand led to a 32-run victory for her country. Kerr was praised by Devine as a “once-in-a-generation player” following his victories as Player of the Match and Player of the Series.
Her status as a once-in-a-generation player is well known. I don’t think she can feel her legs physically to perform what she did with the bat. According to Devine, who was speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony, “She is a fantastic lady and is not a poor cricket player.
New Zealand finished on 158/5 in their 20 overs after Kerr struck four fours and scored a gritty 43 off 38 balls. In response, Kerr claimed three wickets for 24 runs in four overs, limiting South Africa to 126/9. The Wellington native claimed 15 wickets at an average of 7.33 from six appearances, finishing as the tournament’s top wicket-taker. She scored 135 runs with the bat at an average of 27 in the interim.
Although we haven’t had the best results, we know that we have been moving in the correct direction: Sophie Devine
When New Zealand won the Women’s T20 World Cup for the first time, Devine was overcome with emotion. They were only the fourth country to accomplish the feat. Despite making it to the finals in 2009 and 2010, New Zealand was unable to cross the finish line both times. Their losing run was a terrible ten games going into the competition. At the main event, though, they made a change.
What it means to this group of players as well as to me is difficult to describe. Additionally, for cricket in New Zealand. It’s been a while since we had a drink.

This group is fantastic because we know what we’ve been working towards for the past 18 months. Although we haven’t had the best results, we know we’ve been moving in the right path,” Devine stated.
