Sophie Devine, the captain of New Zealand, has made the decision to skip the forthcoming ODI and T20I series against Sri Lanka in order to put her health first. The all-rounder, 35, had already retreated halfway through the Women’s Super Smash.
After seeking expert counsel, she later decided not to participate in the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025). Liz Green, the head of New Zealand Cricket’s (NZC) Women’s High Performance, spoke out about Devine after she made her decision. Green reiterated that the renowned figure has the full support and backing of NZC for her choice. Additionally, they are dedicated to appreciating the welfare of the nation’s cricket players.
Our top focus is the well-being of our players, therefore it’s critical that Sophie Devine be healthy and strong before playing cricket professionally again.
“We completely support Sophie’s decision to not participate in the forthcoming series,” Liz Green, Head of Women’s High Performance at NZC, said Monday.
Devine has been passionate about both domestic and international cricket since the White Ferns’ incredible performance on their way to winning their first T20 World Cup in October 2024. As can be seen, she participated in the December ODI series against Australia and played an intriguing role in the series against India. She then played for the Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL).
Sophie Devine recently participated in the Super Smash, where she bowled brilliantly against Canterbury on January 24th, taking 5/13. Devine’s home side, Wellington, won the event thanks in large part to the batsmanship and ball skills of Amelia Kerr.
Australia will play New Zealand before Sri Lanka.
Speaking of the upcoming home assignment, Sri Lanka women will play New Zealand in the white-ball series across formats. Beginning on March 4, the two teams will play each other in three ODIs. Three T20I matches from March 14 came next, in that order. According to reports, the series’ roster will be announced later this month.
Starting on March 21, the side will play Australia in a three-match Twenty20 International series. These matches are New Zealand’s first Twenty20 International match since their historic World Cup victory while captained by Devine. Although her absence would be a significant loss for New Zealand, the team is still determined to build momentum before a significant year in international cricket.
