On Sunday, April 6, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) suffered their fourth straight loss in the current Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. At Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, the Pat Cummins-led team suffered a defeat to the Gujarat Titans (GT) in front of their home crowd.
The Sunrisers started the previous season with an extremely aggressive strategy, which paid off as they advanced to the finals. In the IPL 2025, they stuck to the same strategy, but it has only helped them win once in five games. The Hyderabad-based team’s concerning net run-rate (NRR) of -1.629 has them mired at the bottom of the points standings.
The team thinks the aggressive approach will be very effective this season as well, according to SRH head coach Daniel Vettori.
He did concede, though, that the players would need to be mindful of the circumstances and the opposition bowlers’ technique.
“We need to respect the conditions and perform a thorough assessment, which is maybe something we haven’t done, but I think we know the style will work. Additionally, Vettori stated at the press conference following the game, “[We] have to respect how well other teams are bowling, putting a lot of planning into our top three and they haven’t been able to execute it at times.”
Additionally, the former New Zealand spinner claimed that neither he nor captain Cummins are panicking. He did admit, though, that losing four straight games makes their IPL 2025 quest more difficult.
“I believe I’m somewhat comparable to Pat Cummins, who I don’t think has ever panicked in his life. However, we are aware of the consequences of dropping four straight games and how challenging it is for the season. It’s difficult because, after [finishing as runners-up] the previous year and then having a strong start, you obviously have great hopes going into the season,” he continued.
Shubman Gill won the toss and chose to field first, limiting Sunrisers to 152/8 going into the game. Mohammed Siraj, who hit a four-for, was the best bowler. The 2022 winners responded by reaching home in 16.4 overs with seven wickets remaining. Sherfane Rutherford (35*) and Washington Sundar (49) contributed well, but Shubman stayed undefeated at 61 off 43 balls.
