About his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025 and his time while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) under Australian captain Pat Cummins, veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has spoken candidly. In order to remain in the postseason race, SRH is getting ready for a matchup against the Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 5.
Shami, who missed the 2024 Indian Premier League because of an ankle injury, returned this season after being acquired by SRH at an incredible INR 10 crore. His recovery, too, has fallen short of expectations. Shami was formerly the IPL 2023 Purple Cap holder with 28 wickets, however he has only taken six wickets in nine games at an average of 56.17 and an economy rate of 11.23.
He has been criticised for his form and fitness following his latest performance against the Gujarat Titans, where he gave up 48 runs in just three overs, and his previous match against the Punjab Kings, where he surrendered 74 runs in four overs—the second-worst in IPL history. To allay worries about injuries, SRH head coach Daniel Vettori has defended him.

In his remarks, Shami commended Cummins’ leadership abilities and disclosed that the Australian, who is a bowler’s captain and understands the strain, brings a wealth of knowledge to the table.
“A leader must be composed. The best in his men can be brought out by a composed leader. Understanding each player’s potential is essential, and Pat Cummins excels at it. Managing both international and young players comes easy to him, and he has years of experience as a captain,” he said.
Additionally, he emphasised the value of the IPL as a stage for up-and-coming talent.
“Young people have a fantastic opportunity to display their abilities, potential, and character in the IPL. Their initiative is heartening and demonstrates how promising Indian cricket’s future is. “This league has an abundance of talent,” he continued.
Meanwhile, the game is crucial for both teams since SRH plays DC at home. Despite being on the verge of elimination with just six points from 10 games, SRH is still mathematically viable. A victory on Monday might offer them a remote chance. After a slump in play in the middle of the season, Delhi, with 12 points, is likewise in a difficult place.
