Asitha Fernando, a fast bowler from Sri Lanka, has signed with renowned English county Glamorgan for the first two months of the 2025 County Championship Division Two season. Until the end of May, the 27-year-old will play in seven County Championship games. Fernando will represent Glamorgan for the first time as a Sri Lankan.
Fernando has made an impression on the international scene since the start of his Test career in January 2021. His performance during Sri Lanka’s most recent tour of England was particularly noteworthy; he ended the series as the series’ top wicket-taker. He was added to the esteemed honours board at Lord’s after his five-wicket haul in the first inning. In 19 Test matches, he has taken 72 wickets at an average of 26.66.
The bowler from Sri Lanka has experience playing county cricket, having represented Nottinghamshire in the past. He has remarkable experience playing cricket in the UK and will try to duplicate his previous success in the English league. Mark Wallace, director of cricket at Glamorgan, said he was thrilled with the signing. Wallace added that the team is excited to welcome Asitha Fernando as their first-ever Sri Lankan player.
At the beginning of the 2025 season, we are thrilled to have a bowler of Asitha’s calibre visit Sophia Gardens. Having played county cricket in the past and excelling in Sri Lanka’s series against England here last summer, Asitha has a solid understanding of the conditions in the UK. As the first player from Sri Lanka to play for Glamorgan, we are excited to see Asitha on the pitch’, Wallace said.
I’m hoping to give it my all in the forthcoming season: Asitha Fernando
Asitha Fernando himself said he was thrilled at the chance. He added that he hoped to do well during his time there and give the Glamorgan team his best effort. In addition, he seemed thrilled to be in the same dressing room as players like Mason Crane and Colin Ingram.
“I’m really grateful to Glamorgan Cricket for this chance. Being a member of Glamorgan and making a comeback to the county cricket scene this year makes me very happy. I greatly improved my game throughout my previous term. I’m excited to play with Mason Crane, Colin Ingram, and the entire Glamorgan squad, and I want to give it my all in the forthcoming season,” the pacer stated.
