Although the India tour of England team has not yet been revealed, there have been several rumours regarding the team’s captain for the five-match Test series. According to speculations, Rishabh Pant and Shubman Gill are two of the most likely candidates to captain the squad in red-ball cricket.
Since both players are already regarded as the next big stars in India cricket, some former players have supported this move.
But Sunil Gavaskar, the 1983 World Cup champion and former great Test batsman, has chosen Jasprit Bumrah as the ideal team captain. Since he would be the greatest person to know how many spells Bumrah can bowl in a Test match, the 75-year-old commentator clarified this in relation to minimising his workload with this move. Gavaskar claims that this is important because Bumrah is currently the team’s top bowler.
“Only he knows what his workload is. They would always want more from Bumrah if you appointed someone else. He will be aware that “yes, I need to take a break” if he is your top bowler. “Jasprit Bumrah alone, in my opinion,” Gavaskar stated on Sports Today.
“I am aware of the conjecture about his workload and other related matters. Give it to him so he can determine how many overs he needs to bowl, when he should be removed, and when he should take a break. The former India legend went on to say, “That would be the best thing.”

Furthermore, Sunil Gavaskar also mentioned the gap between some of the Test matches that will be played in England and noted that Bumrah would not have to miss a single game since he would have enough time to recover. Gavaskar further supported his opinion of making him the Test captain, stating that he would be the best person to know when to bowl in those conditions as well.
“He (Bumrah) may not have to miss a Test match. If you give it to him, he might know when to stop before his body starts to crumble. For me, give it to him. After the first Test, there is an eight-day gap. There’s enough time to recover. Then, there are two back-to-back Test matches. That’s fine. There’s then another gap. If you give him the captaincy, he will be the best person to know when to bowl,” Gavaskar concluded.
