Sunil Gavaskar, one of the greatest batters of all time, departed long before T20 cricket took the cricket world by storm. Despite never having played a Twenty20 match, the 73-year-old has always been near to the sport as an expert and commentator.
Recently, as the Indian Premier League (IPL) commemorated its 16th anniversary, Sunil Gavaskar made an interesting revelation regarding the teams for which he would have preferred to play. Gavaskar also expressed his desire to have shared a locker room with Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni.
“Other than Mumbai Indians, who else? Alternatively, I’d like to play for the Chennai Super Kings. Chennai Super Kings for two reasons: first, the Chennai proprietors are cricket enthusiasts who have contributed significantly to the sport. Srinivasan sir has contributed significantly to cricket, said Sunil Gavaskar to Star Sports.
“The second major reason would be to observe MS Dhoni’s leadership style while sitting in the locker room with him.” Is he as composed and tranquil in the locker room as he is on the field? Does he lose his temper when a player drops a catch or when a fielder is not backed up? This is what I’d like to know,” he continued.
Sunil Gavaskar is the only all-rounder I would choose for Kapil Dev.
In addition, Sunil Gavaskar discussed the players he would have liked to see participate in the IPL. The legendary Indian batsman mentioned a number of his compatriots and opined that their playstyle would have been ideal for the T20 format.
“Look, a batsman I would like to see is Sandeep Patil; there is only one all-rounder I would pick — Kapil Dev; for the bowler, I would like to see BS Chandrashekhar play in the T20 format because his bowling action was not only suited for test cricket, but also for one-day cricket and T20 cricket,” Gavaskar said.
