As the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) crushed the Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) hitter in their IPL 2025 match, the cheering Chepauk audience that had welcomed MS Dhoni back as skipper after 682 days soon fell silent. Sunil Narine made a spectacular delivery by trapping Dhoni LBW for just one as KKR’s bowlers went on a rampage in wickets.
After Ruturaj Gaikwad’s devastating injury that ended his season, the renowned wicketkeeper-batter resumed his captaincy duties. CSK was asked to bat first, but their innings never got going. With his team struggling at 75/7 in the 16th over, Dhoni entered the game at number 9.
But four deliveries later, Sunil Narine outwitted him once more.
The veteran spinner’s delivery was flung up on off and turned in slightly. Dhoni got smacked on the pads after completely missing the ball while trying to work it on the leg side. In an effort with a bat involved, the on-field umpire raised the finger, and the Ranchi-born referee immediately reviewed. On the ball tracker, the third umpire declared that there was no contact with the three reds.

In 20 T20 matches, Dhoni has a striking rate of about 52 and an average of about 14.4 against Narine. Vaibhav Arora, Varun Chakravarthy, Moeen Ali, and Harshit Rana all helped Narine in destroying CSK’s lineup. The hosts only managed 18 runs in the first five overs of the match, and at the end of the 16th over, they were 77/8. Rahul Tripathi, 16, and Vijay Shankar, 29, put up a fight, but it was in vain.
Additionally, the five-time champs added Deepak Hooda as an Impact Sub in the hopes of getting some runs, but he left for a duck. In the 20 overs they were given, the home team ultimately concluded their innings at 103/9.
