One of the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most formidable teams is Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Last year, they reached the finals by implementing a strong bowling attack and aggressive batting strategy. By producing enormous totals during the season, they smashed a number of records. They are among the most deadly teams in the tournament because of the team’s constant performance under Pat Cummins‘ direction.
They are successful outside of the IPL as well. By purchasing teams in England’s The Hundred and South Africa’s SA20, the Sunrisers have broadened their brand internationally. The Orange Army is ranked fifth among the wealthiest IPL teams, with a brand worth of USD 85 million. They assembled a formidable team in the 2025 mega-auction, combining young and seasoned players. The franchise’s total auction expenditure was 119.80 crore.
Ownership and Net Worth:
The Sun TV Network, a Chennai-based media company, owns Sunrisers Hyderabad. One of the biggest media companies in South India, Sun TV Network was founded by Kalanithi Maran and has businesses in television, newspapers, FM radio, direct-to-home (DTH) services, and filmmaking. As the current CEO of SRH, his daughter Kavya Maran is actively involved in the games and the auctions.
After the Deccan Chargers franchise was sold, Sun TV Network paid USD 158 million to acquire SRH in 2012. With an estimated net worth of INR 735 crore as of 2024, SRH is among the most financially stable IPL teams. For the fiscal year that ended in March 2024, Sun TV Network, which runs 37 satellite television stations in several languages, had a total revenue of INR 4,630.19 crore. Their cricket teams account for a considerable amount of this money; SRH alone has contributed INR 659.03 crore, which is a twofold rise from INR 276.01 crore the year before.
Expansion into Global Cricket:
The Sunrisers brand has expanded itself to international franchise leagues, including Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) in SA20. Their South African T20 team has won back-to-back titles in the SA20 league. Recently, they also acquired the Northern Superchargers franchise in England’s The Hundred for GBP 100 million. This made them the third IPL franchise, after Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants, to own a team in England’s 100-ball competition. The acquisition also saw them complete a full 100% takeover of the Yorkshire-based franchise.
Revenue Sources of Sunrisers Hyderabad
The financial success of the teams comes from multiple revenue streams. A significant chunk is from the IPL’s central pool, which includes broadcasting rights and sponsorship deals. With the IPL securing multi-billion-dollar broadcasting deals, each franchise receives a share of this massive revenue. Their merchandise and jersey sponsors contribute significantly to their overall earnings.
Notably, the team’s home ground, Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad, sees strong attendance during IPL matches, and their matchday revenue has grown significantly over the years. Sun TV Network’s success in the media and entertainment industry also adds to its financial strength. With their recent expansion into Hindi, Bangla, and Marathi markets, Sun TV Network’s revenue has seen strong growth.
