After winning the toss, Brian Masaba, the captain of Uganda, decided to field first. The choice proved expensive, as the Afghan team made a quick start, amassing 66 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket. It is all due to the opening pair of Ibrahim Zadran (70) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (76), who put up a partnership of 154 runs for the first wicket. After a disastrous beginning, the Ugandan team recovered to pose a serious threat to the Rashid Khan-led team.
Following their departures, the Afghan side lost three wickets in quick succession: Najibullah Zadran (2), Gulbadin Naib (4), and Azmatullah Omarzai (5). At that point, the score was 156/2. After 20 overs, Rashid and co. declared their innings over at 183/5.
With all five wickets shared between them, Cosmas Kyewuta, Masaba, and Alpesh Ramjani were Uganda’s finest bowlers. Masaba, the captain, was his team’s most economical bowler, taking two wickets in his four overs while only giving up 21 runs.
Afghanistan scores a resounding win.
Masaba and Co. faced a formidable task in trying to accomplish their goal against Afghanistan’s elite bowling outfit. Afghanistan was primed to put on their best bowling display with three spinners on their side and the surface going in their favour.
Uganda lost wickets at regular intervals during the second innings; thus, they never seemed to be in the game when they came to bat. They made only twenty-one runs during the powerplay while losing five wickets. Despite picking up a fifer and finishing with statistics of 5/9 in his four overs, Fazalhaq Farooqi was his team’s best bowler. Both Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq took two wickets apiece, demonstrating their exceptional skill with the ball. No batter was able to stay at the crease for very long, as Uganda was bowled out for just 58.
Afghanistan won their opening encounter at the 2024 T20 World Cup, so they will be confident.
