The Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York will host the opening match between India and Ireland in the T20 World Cup 2024.
The Indian squad will be keen to build on their success and rise to the occasion after their victory over Bangladesh in the warm-up match on June 1—where the majority of players performed really well—and their excellent showings throughout the IPL 2024. India will also be looking to gather momentum from this match in preparation for their much-awaited matchup with arch-rivals Pakistan, which will also be held at the same location as their next match.
Ireland has been quite busy this past month getting ready and putting their act together for the big event. Despite their three-match T20I series loss of 1-2 against Pakistan, there were enough positives to be gained, especially from their batting, which averaged 184 runs per series. Furthermore, after winning three of their four games in the Netherlands tri-nation T20I series—one game was cancelled owing to bad weather—they would also be much more motivated going into the World Cup.
It was evident that hitters from both sides found it difficult to get going in the inaugural match between Sri Lanka and South Africa, which was held at the 34,000-seat stadium due to the drop-in pitch’s inconsistent bounce and the slow outfield the venue provided. Regarding the meeting between Ireland and India, a similar spectacle might be anticipated.
The teams are only expected to face each other twice in the T20 World Cup; the first time was in 2009 at Trent Bridge, where India won by eight wickets.
