The second semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2024 has been given an extra 250 minutes by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI). It is important to note that there won’t be a backup day scheduled for the match.
that plans had been made to conclude the match on the same day. To avoid the team having to play, travel, and then play back-to-back on consecutive days, the game has also been given four hours.
Remarkably, the tournament’s inaugural semi-final will take place in Trinidad on June 26 at 8.30 p.m. local time. That match has a reserve day scheduled; in the event of rain, play will continue on June 27.
On June 27, however, the second semi-final will take place in Guyana and start at 10.30 AM local time. The match must be completed that same day. The players’ travel day is June 28, and the final is scheduled for June 29. The ICC has allowed an additional 250 minutes for the match, meaning that the umpires may need to wait up to eight hours to conclude play.
“There is an equal chance for all four teams to win a game. Because the first semi-final starts in the evening and the second semi-final starts at 10.30 AM, it is not possible to pay for all of the additional time on the same day. This decision was made for performance reasons, to ensure teams do not have to ‘play, travel, play’ on consecutive days. Additionally, it guarantees that spectators in the stadium will have the best opportunity of witnessing the outcome on game day, an informed source.
