Canada and the United States (USA vs Canada) faced off at Dallas’ Grand Prairie Stadium on June 1. At a venue where the first Twenty20 International was being played, the Monank Patel-led team chose to field first. With the help of a late burst from wicketkeeper-batter Shreyas Movva of Canada and two half-centuries from Navneet Dhaliwal and Nicholas Kirton, the team amassed a more-than-competitive total of 194/5 in their quota.
When the first batsmen for the co-host were out for low scores, things seemed to be going uphill. However, a remarkable batting performance by Aaron Jones and Andries Gous changed the tide. Particularly impressive was Jones, who completed on 94* and used a six to secure the victory. With twice as many deliveries left, the USA secured an impressive start to their campaign with a decisive seven-wicket victory.
1) Corey Anderson’s return: A remarkable achievement
The former New Zealand player, who played for the Kiwis from 2012 to 2017, was participating in his first T20 World Cup following an eight-year hiatus. Surprisingly, he took out Dhaliwal for 61 off 44 with his first delivery when he returned to the big game and took a wicket.
2) Turning stones with third-wicket tones: Gous and Jones
With the score at 42/2 in 6.3 overs, vice-captain Jones of the USA joined Gous in the middle, but he had a stiff 195 to chase. To put the chase down to a run-a-ball, though, they both played brilliantly together, including an exciting 33-run over against Jeremy Gordon in the 14th over of the chase.
3) Canada soars in the extras category with a tonne of wides
The USA gave up 10 extras in the first innings, which would have seemed excessive, but Canada’s performance drastically declined as they gave up an astounding 19 extras. Among these, wides accounted for an astounding 14 runs.
