Due to technical difficulties caused by the stadium’s floodlights being turned off, the 58th IPL 2025 match between the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala was cancelled. The game started an hour later than planned at 7:30 p.m. IST because of an earlier weather delay.
Shreyas Iyer, captain of PBKS, won the toss and decided to bat first.
PBKS had a great start thanks to their openers, Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya. With a boundary off Mitchell Starc’s opening delivery, the youthful left-hander set the tone. The Australian pacer was hammered for three boundaries by the wicketkeeper-batter in the third over. In the fourth over, the pair hit the team’s fifty. By the end of the powerplay, PBKS had amassed 69 runs without losing any wickets.
In just twenty-five balls, the 23-year-old reached his half-century. The right-handed batsman quickly followed him, scoring his fourth consecutive fifty in 28 balls. After the first partnership reached 122 runs, DC left-arm pacer T. Natarajan ended the partnership by removing Arya for a remarkable 70 off 41 deliveries, which included six sixes and five fours.
A delay was immediately made when one of the floodlight towers failed as PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer approached the crease. The game couldn’t be resumed after a few moments because another tower went off. The technical malfunction ultimately resulted to the match being cancelled. Although official confirmation is still pending, there is conjecture that the match may be rescheduled.
In the meanwhile, PBKS could have benefited greatly from this fixture. Had the game proceeded and PBKS prevailed, they would have been the first team to guarantee a berth in the IPL 2025 playoffs. With six victories thus far this season, DC is presently ranked fifth.
