It seemed unthinkable before the match, but the West Indies pulled off a miracle at the Gabba, defeating Australia at their stronghold. Australia needed to win the game and the series with 216 runs, but when Day 3 of the match came to a close, they had already lost two wickets at a cost of 60 runs.
Day 4 started with the Windies focused on one goal, and the visitors performed to the best of their skills. Travis Head returned to the pavilion after all-rounder Cameron Green was dismissed for 42 runs in 73 deliveries in exchange for a golden duck.
In addition, the host’s middle order was unable to produce much, with players like Mitchell Marsh scoring 10 runs and Alex Carey only managing 2.
Nonetheless, Australia’s innings was stabilized and hopes were maintained by Steve Smith’s effort.
Smith batted steadily till the very end, amassing 91* runs in 146 deliveries without losing, but the absence of a reliable batting partner prevented the veteran from leading his team to victory.
Regarding the West Indies, the team’s motivation came from teenage bowler Shamar Joseph. Playing the first series of his dreams, Joseph accomplished the impossibility by taking seven outstanding wickets and leading the West Indies to victory.
Joseph helped the West Indies dismiss players like Green, Head, Mitchell Marsh, Carey, Starc, Cummins, and Hazlewood, dismissing them for 207 runs. This helped his side win the game by eight runs and tie the series.
Alzarri Joseph also claimed two wickets, while Justin Greaves scored one run. Both teams will now turn their attention to the shorter forms as they prepare for the ODI series now that the Test series is concluded.
