Tim Southee future in New Zealand won’t be decided until the pacer contacts experts at home, according to head coach Gary Stead. We can’t make a decision regarding the World Cup till that time, he continued.
On September 15, while fielding in the fourth One-Day International against England at Lord’s, Tim Southee shattered a bone in his right thumb.
“We’ll just need to understand the timeframes and what that looks like, and once we have that information, we will then be able to move forward and make a decision,” Stead added.
The coach emphasised that Tim Southee, one of the 15 players selected for the World Cup in India, will have “every chance” to be healthy and available.
We’ll want to give Tim every opportunity to demonstrate his fitness, Stead added. Since it’s a bone fracture, there will be some element of uncertainty when he has to resume catching balls and bowling.
For him as well, the recovery phase over the next 10 to 12 days will be crucial.
Before playing exhibition matches against Pakistan on September 29 and South Africa on October 2, New Zealand will play three one-day internationals in Bangladesh beginning on September 21. On October 5, they face off in Ahmedabad against the reigning champions, England.
