The highly anticipated major ICC (International Cricket Council) cricket clash Champions Trophy 2025 is nearing the knockout stage of the eight-team event. While Group A had a clear picture with India and New Zealand advancing to the playoffs, Group B was yet to confirm two teams. Match 11 of the flagship tournament took place on Saturday, March 1, in Karachi, with England (ENG) taking on South Africa.
After winning the toss, Skipper Jos Buttler elected to bat first, assuming that the pitch was suitable for batting. Notably, prior to this game, the Three Lions had already been eliminated from the CT 2025 after successive losses. Aside from the blazing opener, Ben Duckett, the club only saw the experienced Joe Root do well at bat. The rest of the hitters struggled to get started in the ICC event. The trend continued, as Buttler’s decision to bat first appeared to backfire. They were already four down (99/4) within the 100-run mark and never recovered.
Root eventually led the team’s scoring with 37 runs off 44 balls. Among the standout bowling efforts, Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen both grabbed three wickets to unsettle the England batting squad, with other bowlers taking the remaining four wickets. As a result, the English side was dismissed for 179 in the 39th over.
South Africa, like the run chasers, experienced early nervousness in front of a small objective. They had lost two wickets early on, with the score at 47/2 in the ninth over after losing both openers, Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton. However, despite the strain, seasoned Heinrich Klaasen and Rassie van der Dussen played sensible fifties and put up a match-defining 127-run partnership for the third wicket, putting South Africa on the verge of victory. Adil Rashid dismissed Klaasen (64 runs off 56 balls), but Dussen stayed unbroken (72* runs off 87 balls) as the Rainbow Nation prevailed by seven wickets.
In terms of England’s bowling, aside from Archer, who took two wickets early on, only Rashid took a wicket while remaining frugal with his leg spin. South Africa advanced to the semifinals from Group B as the top seeds, but the Three Lions went winless in the tournament. All-rounder Marco Jansen was named the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding fielding and three wickets (3/39). Meanwhile, here’s how the England vs South Africa match sparked a meme frenzy among supporters.
