On Sunday, March 2, India defeated New Zealand by 44 runs in Champions Trophy 2025 match No. 12 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
After winning the toss, Mitchell Santner chose to field first. In the third over, Matt Henry got rid of the highly effective Shubman Gill, giving New Zealand their first breakthrough. Kyle Jamieson dismissed Rohit Sharma after he hit a couple of boundaries. Henry was viciously cut off by Virat Kohli, but a flying Glenn Phillips brilliantly caught him.
After losing three wickets for thirty runs, India was in trouble. After being moved up the order, Axar Patel and Shreyas Iyer created a crucial combination, scoring 98 off 136 balls. The all-rounder scored a vital 42 before being removed.
But before being removed by William O’Rourke for a 98-ball 79, Iyer persisted in batting cautiously. During his innings, he hit two sixes and four fours. KL Rahul started, but he was unable to turn it into a significant score. India batted their 50 overs and finished at 249/9 thanks to Hardik Pandya’s run-a-ball of 45, which was a brilliant move in the last overs. Henry concluded with stats of 5/42 in eight overs, making him the best bowler among the Kiwis.
Rachin Ravindra was bowled by Hardik Pandya, but he holed out to deep third man in the fourth over, costing New Zealand the wicket. A barrage of boundaries was blasted by Kane Williamson as he emerged to the crease. Will Young, Varun Chakravarthy’s first casualty of the match, was trying to anchor the innings.
On a surfacing that was assisting the spinners, Daryl Mitchell and Tom Latham sought to spend time in the middle. They were unable to build on their early successes, though. At 159/6, New Zealand was in serious difficulty after big-hitters Glenn Phillips and Michael Bracewell were knocked quickly after each other.
Williamson was fighting by himself for the Blackcaps, but Rahul out-stunted him off Axar’s bowling in the 41st over, ending his 81-run innings. Despite a couple lustful blows throughout his 28-run knock, Mitchell Santner ultimately had too much to do. India finished first in Group A after winning the game by 44 runs. Chakaravarthy earned Player of the Match after taking five wickets for 42 runs in ten overs.
