On Friday, February 14, Sri Lanka played Australia in the second ODI at the R Premadasa Stadium. After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat. Pathum Nissanka left the team early, having scored just six runs. Before Madushka was removed on 51 off 70, he and Kusal Mendis formed an important partnership of 98 runs for the second wicket. Kamindu Mendis only managed four runs in his eight-ball stint.
Mendis and Charith Asalanka put up a 94-run partnership as Sri Lanka lost three wickets with just 121 runs scored. As the batter was eventually removed on 101 off 115, Mendis celebrated his well-earned century. Asalanka and Janith Liyanage combined to add 66 runs for the fifth wicket after the set batsman had left.
As Sri Lanka scored a respectable 281 runs, Asalanka and Liyanage both remained undefeated at 78 and 32, respectively. The top rank fell like a deck of cards as Australia emerged to protect the target. The top three batters, Travis Head, Jake Fraser-McGurk, and Matthew Short, were selected by Asitha Fernando for 2, 18, and 9 runs, respectively. A brief, 46-run stand between Steven Smith and Josh Inglis provided some relief.
Inglis came back to break the partnership with a score of 22 off 27. After that, it was disastrous because the bowlers from Sri Lanka quickly removed the remaining hitters. None of the batters after Smith reached the 10-run threshold, and he scored 29 runs. Sri Lanka won the match by a massive 174 runs after Australia was knocked out for just 107 runs in 24.2 overs. Dunith Wellalage, who took four wickets, was the best bowler.
