Gautam Gambhir’s coaching career with the Indian squad has gotten off to an unexpected start. After the team’s poor performances, the former India opener, who replaced Rahul Dravid as head coach, is being scrutinised. India suffered a humiliating defeat at home in the Test series against New Zealand after losing the ODI series against Sri Lanka under his leadership.
Australia is leading 2-1 with one game remaining in the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25, but things have not gone smoothly there either. At the height of the criticism, the players are questioning the team’s communication, and there is disarray in the dressing room.
Additionally, according to the article, Gambhir’s communication is not as successful as it was with Dravid, the former coach. The veteran is also being likened to Ravi Shastri, a former cricket player and coach for India who had his own methods of managing the team. It’s important to note that Gambhir had no coaching experience other than his IPL stint with the KKR, therefore his nomination caused some controversy.
Gautam Gambhir’s job is at danger
The 43-year-old’s strategy of keeping the players in the dark about their exclusion has reportedly not been well received by the team. According to reports, India captain Rohit Sharma insisted on having a face-to-face conversation with the player over their dismissal from the team. However, the players have not been informed of the decisions made regarding them since Gambhir joined the team.
“The Champions Trophy will be played after the Test match. According to a top BCCI official cited by Hindustan Times, “even Gautam Gambhir’s position wouldn’t be safe if the performance doesn’t improve.”
“His equation with the selection committee is also not particularly clear at this point,” a BCCI source added.
