Varun Chakravarthy, a spinner for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was fined 25% of his match money and given one demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct in Match 57 of the 2025 IPL against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Eden Gardens on May 7, 2025. Article 2.5 of the Code, which covers words, gestures, or acts aimed at a dismissed batter that could cause an aggressive reaction, was used by the IPL to confirm the sentence, citing a Level 1 infraction.
When Varun Chakravarthy disqualified and sent off CSK’s Dewald Brevis, his offence was evident, even though the IPL statement did not go into detail about the particular event.
After opting to bat first in the game, KKR made the most of the powerplay with fast starts from Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Sunil Narine, and Ajinkya Rahane, reaching 67/1 in six overs. Even though the CSK spinners were hesitant to score runs in the middle overs, Andre Russell’s late burst helped KKR reach 179.
Despite rookie Urvil Patel adding an 11-ball 31 and losing five wickets in the PowerPlay, CSK’s chase got off to a bad start. But it was Brevis who was the best batsman. Brevis hit 30 runs off of Vaibhav Arora in the eleventh over. Prior to that over, KKR had a 78% chance of winning. It was CSK who took the initiative after that.
Despite dismissing Brevis in the thirteenth over, Chakravarthy was unable to help KKR win the match. MS Dhoni hammered a six off the opening ball of the last over to go closer to the objective after Shivam Dube played a vital knock. Then, with a boundary over mid-on, Anshul Kamboj completed the deal, marking CSK’s first successful chase of 180 or more since 2018.
KKR is now sixth in the standings with 11 points from 12 games. They need to defeat SRH and RCB in their next two games and pray for good outcomes in order to maintain their hopes of finishing in the top four.
