Virat Kohli, the cricket star from India, has always been one of the most expressive and passionate players on the field. But recently, the 36-year-old batter disclosed how his composure and violence have become talking points. Kohli joked that he had stopped listening to what other people think since he doesn’t know what they expect from him.
The right-handed hitter has never held back from showing his feelings over his career, whether it be through vocal outbursts, fervent celebrations, or expressive reactions. Nonetheless, Kohli has shown a considerably more composed demeanor in recent years. People are taking notice of this shift, and some are now doubting his sincerity. The Delhi native said that he was unsure of what needed to be done.
“That also makes people unhappy.” To tell the truth, I have no idea what to do. Whereas my tranquility used to be an issue, my aggression is now a concern. Kohli stated at the RCB Innovational Lab Indian Sports Summit, “I don’t really focus on it because I don’t know what needs to be done.”
He clarified that his combative nature came naturally to him, which occasionally caused him to act inappropriately on the field. He did, however, emphasize that he always had good intentions and wanted to see his team thrive.
“Yes, I do have a tendency to cross boundaries because of the type of person I am and the personality I possess. And that’s something I’ve never avoided. That being said, the beginning point has generally been of care, however occasionally it may not have been sent with the correct intention. I want everything to work out so that my team wins. For this reason, you can feel my joy when we get a wicket in a close game. Indeed, this is precisely what must occur, I think. Moreover, it is how I portray it,” he continued.
My competitive spirit has not diminished: Virat Kohli
The experienced batter also discussed how his celebratory style has changed over time. Although he used to show his feelings often, his priorities have changed.
There are many people who may not have been able to digest it. But it always originates in the proper place for me. It obviously puts me in a different place when I’m batting. For the simple reason that I have no regular, little events to look forward to. I mean, completing the game is the ultimate goal. After that, I can indeed portray it in the same manner as before. Once more, things are unfolding organically for me. It’s naturally tapering down,” Kohli continued.
Despite his tempered hostility, he also emphasized that people find it difficult to comprehend how his competitiveness remains unaltered. The 36-year-old asserted that it’s not always essential to act aggressively.
“My competition hasn’t decreased. In my opinion, many individuals find it quite challenging to comprehend how competitiveness will remain at the same level if hostility does not. You can remain aggressive in your thoughts, but you don’t have to vent your frustrations frequently, as I did in the recent past as well. To be honest, I don’t feel good about such things myself, so it’s not a good thing,” he said.
Kohli will play again for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 2025 Indian Premier League. Acquired for an astounding INR 21 crore, he will be anticipating the next season. At Eden Gardens on March 22, the team will take on the reigning champion Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the tournament opener.
