Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) eventually ended their 18-year wait for an Indian Premier League (IPL) title, defeating Punjab Kings (PBKS) in a thrilling final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. RCB won their first IPL title with a stunning six-run triumph.
As the contest approached its conclusion in the closing overs of the chase, emotions ran high. Virat Kohli, the RCB idol and India’s great hitter, was spotted in tears on the pitch. Josh Hazlewood remained composed in the final over, with PBKS needing 29 runs. After only two deliveries, the cameras caught Kohli concealing his face and trying to hide his tears, capturing the emotional weight of nearly two decades of waiting.
Kohli, who has been with the team since its establishment in 2008, finally won the coveted IPL championship, this time under Rajat Patidar’s guidance.

Virat Kohli praised the historic victory to the fans and reflected on his long career with RCB. The stalwart remarked that he has given his all to the franchise, from youth to peak. The 36-year-old also paid tribute to his long-time teammate and RCB icon, AB de Villiers. He accepted that de Villiers gave his all for this team and admitted that the victory was also for him.
“This victory benefits both the supporters and the squad. I gave this squad my youth, prime, and experience. I tried to win it every season and gave it everything I had. I never imagined this day would come, and I was overtaken with emotion when we won. What ABD has done for the franchise is incredible, and I told him ‘this is as much yours as it is ours,'” Kohli said on air via Star Sports.
Despite his four-year retirement, he has won the most Player of the Match awards in the franchise. “He deserves to be on the podium, lifting the cup,” Kohli stated after winning the prize.
