It has been confirmed that Waqar Younis, a former cricketer for Pakistan, will mentor the Lions in 2024 Champions One-Day Cup in addition to the team being assigned to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for training and preparation for the 2024–25 domestic season.
Misbah-ul-Haq and Shoaib Malik were named the respective mentors of the Wolves and the Stallions in the One-Day Cup, so the former cricketing icon who was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in December 2013 is not the only former Pakistani player to coach a team in the competition.
The former Pakistani captain expressed his happiness at being selected for the position and his excitement for what the tournament’s first edition held in store. Additionally, he compared the competition to a means of selection for the national setup, particularly considering that the Champions Trophy 2025 will take place the following year.
The prospect of being able to support player growth once more excites me. I am really excited about the new challenge this new role brings. Apart from the opportunity to collaborate with some of the best cricket players, the mentor-mentee relationship will be intriguing as we all try to outsmart each other. Every match counts in this special format, which is expected to up the ante on game excitement. As cited by the Pakistan Cricket Board in a press release posted on their website,
“Fans can anticipate an exciting 17-day tournament comprising 14 matches, packed with high-stakes action and unforgettable moments,” said Waqar Younis.
“The Champions One-Day Cup is an invaluable opportunity for players to showcase their skills and stake their claim for national selection, particularly with a series of high-profile 50-over international matches coming up, culminating in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.” Without a doubt, this competition will help us find future stars who, with the correct direction and upbringing, can contribute significantly to our nation for many years to come.
