Day 1 of the second Test match against New Zealand in Pune saw India make a huge breakthrough thanks to Washington Sundar, who returned to the Test team after 2021. The hosts were in dire need of Rachin Ravindra’s wicket because, as he did in Bengaluru, he looked dangerous when batting at number four and could have ended the match.
After establishing a partnership with Devon Conway (who scored 76 runs) and Daryl Mitchell, Rachin had his sights set on the goal and was batting at 65. The team benefited greatly from India captain Rohit Sharma’s decision to bring back Sundar for a brief stint just before the second session ended.
Despite bowling well in the morning session, Sundar was unable to claim a wicket. Ravindra’s off-stump was shattered by the 25-year-old’s peach-like delivery in the 60th over of the match. Sundar took advantage of the fact that he was unable to read the line and turn. Murali Karthik, who was in the commentary box, praised the spinner for his “magical delivery” and expressed satisfaction at the wicket.

Just before tea, Sundar fires Tom Blundell.
Just before the tea break, in the very next over, Sundar took out Tom Blundell. Following Rachin’s dismissal, the keeper-batter reached the crease but was unable to leave an impression, scoring just three runs before Sundar managed to get past the space between his bat and pad and strike timber.
Through the defence!

Daryl Mitchell was Sundar’s third wicket shortly after the interval, having left for eighteen runs. India won the match thanks to the spinner’s three quick wickets, which also validated his selection.

Although New Zealand dominated the morning session, Sundar is leading the charge as the hosts gradually regain the lead in the match. Ra Ashwin took three wickets earlier in the day, in the meantime.
