Wessly Madhevere’s innings in the Zimbabwe Tri-Series opener against South Africa ended unexpectedly when he jumped onto the stumps to flick the ball off his pads. It appeared that his loss of balance while performing the shot caused his rear foot to travel too deep into the crease before landing on the stumps.
Wessly Madhevere, who was playing his 77th T20I, was forced to return after scoring only one run from nine deliveries.
He could never get going and react to the ball’s conduct off the pitch, especially against Lungi Ngidi, who ended up claiming a freak dismissal. The 24-year-old all-rounder could not believe what had happened as he walked off. Ngidi, on the other hand, was ecstatic to have something to show for his solid start to the innings.

In terms of the contest, Zimbabwe were defeated by five wickets with 25 deliveries remaining. When asked to bat first, they only managed 141/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Skipper Sikandar Raza top-scored with an undefeated 54 off 38 balls. The seasoned all-rounder’s innings featured three fours and two sixes. For the South Africans, Ngidi finished with 1/15 in four overs.
The Proteas were off to a shaky start. They had lost three wickets inside the powerplay. International debutant Rubin Hermann combined brilliantly with Dewald Brevis to stitch together a 72-run partnership off just 37 deliveries. Corbin Bosch (23* off 15) and George Linde (3*) were the unbeaten batters at the end. Despite Linde’s 3/10 in the first innings, Brevis was awarded the Player of the Match accolade for his power-hitting knock.
The Proteas will be seen facing New Zealand next in the second fixture of the Tri-Nation Series, and would be hoping to add another win to their kitty to ease their chances of making it to the finals of the all-important series in their neighbouring land.
