The Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will compete virtually for a postseason berth in Match No. 63 of the IPL 2025 on May 21 at Mumbai’s legendary Wankhede Stadium. There is only one berth left, and it will be a straight match between MI and DC, as the Gujarat Titans (GT), Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Punjab Kings (PBKS) have already secured the top three spots.
However, the outcome of this game could be influenced by the weather. Notably, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already introduced a 120-minute buffer for all remaining league matches in response to the growing prospect of rain. This allows for the possibility of finishing a full 20-over game even in the event that weather-related disruptions occur.
Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium: May 21 weather report
The IPL 2025 playoffs have also been moved from areas that have experienced rain to safer locations, Mullanpur (New Chandigarh) and Ahmedabad. Mullanpur will hold Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator, while Ahmedabad will host Qualifier 2 and the Final. In addition, the last home match between RCB and SRH has been moved from rain-stricken Bengaluru to BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow.
Mumbai is already seeing pre-monsoon showers, and both MI and DC are monitoring the skies. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts that the city will have a lot of rain through May 25. Even though the evening prediction is more certain, the morning thunderstorm activity could cause delays and a wet outfield.
Pitch Report
The surface at Wankhede is known for its batting-friendly conditions and smaller boundaries. But overcast skies and potential rain could revise pitch conditions, making it more favourable for seamers.
What will happen if the match is washed out?
If rain plays spoilsport and the game is abandoned, both MI and DC will receive one point each. This means MI will go up to 15 points, while DC will move to 14. This scenario won’t confirm the spot, and the decision will be pushed to both teams’ respective final league games against the Punjab Kings.
- If MI wins their final game, they reach 17 points and qualify;
- If DC wins and MI loses, DC can reach 16, surpassing MI’s 15;
- If both lose, MI goes through, as they’re already a point ahead;
- If both win, MI still goes through with 17 points.
