In the past, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has excelled at using the Decision Review System (DRS); in fact, the fans have given DRS the moniker “Dhoni Review System.”
However, in Match 38 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against the Mumbai Indians (MI), the 43-year-old wicketkeeper failed a review. CSK would have taken a wicket in the opening over if he had done it.
Ryan Rickelton, the opener for MI, had already hit two fours before the fifth delivery in the first over. The sixth delivery then came back in from outside off, and Rickelton was trapped on his front pad by Khaleel Ahmed, the left-arm seamer for CSK.
Everyone assumed there was an inside edge as the ball missed Vijay Shankar at first slip. Khaleel made a feeble argument but immediately withdrew, believing there was some advantage.
No other player, not even MS Dhoni behind the stumps, made an appeal.
Additionally, there was no debate on the review. The game continued even though it appeared close to the naked eye. Replays, however, revealed that there was no edge and that the ball would have struck the leg stump. It was, indeed, THREE REDS.
In the 177-run pursuit, MI got out to a fast start, which provided Rickelton an early reprieve.
