The caravan proceeded to Match 6 in the current Women’s Premier League (WPL 2025) after five games, when the Delhi Capitals (DC-W) and UP Warriorz (UP-W) faced off. Notably, Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara hosted the match on Wednesday, February 19. For quite some time now, cricket fans have been entertained by the exciting women’s T20 cricket festival, which is currently in full swing.
Talking points from WPL 2025’s fifth match:
1. Kiran Navgire’s amazing fifty lights illuminate Vadodara
Following Meg Lanning’s invitation to bat first, UP-W’s batting was a roller coaster; while they occasionally did not bat as well as they would have liked, they also had some brilliant moments during the match. Kiran Navgire, a rising star, attracted attention with her magnificent batting. She displayed her flawless shot selection while scoring an amazing half-century (51 runs off 27 balls). Three sixes and six fours, respectively, were threaded throughout her glittering knock. Consequently, UP was able to reach its 20-over quota with a respectable total of 166/7.
2. Chinelle, the debutante Henry’s fiery cameo put the finishing touches on UP’s innings.
Shweta Sehrawat was a useful knocker in addition to Navgire (37 runs off 33 balls). The UP Warriorz’s game was set up by debutant Chinelle Henry’s stunning appearance, which stole the show. With a scorching 33 runs off just 15 balls, the West Indian delivered her team a final flourish. Therefore, even though they got off to a great start, they lost the plot in the midst of the game before finishing with a respectable score.
3. The Delhi Capitals won the thrilling last over thanks to Lanning’s batsmanship.
Meg Lanning, the captain of the Delhi Capitals, started the innings with Shafali Varma, an explosive Indian batsman, in response to the run chase. Before being removed by Deepti Sharma, Shafali Varma built up a 66-run stand with a fast knock (26 off 16 balls) in her feisty flair. The legendary former world champion Australian Lanning, however, managed to milk the runs (69 off 49 balls) and maintain one end of the crease in the run chase before being thoroughly thrashed by Grace Harris.
Jemimah Rodrigues also died quickly after Shafali Varma without posing a threat to the scorekeepers. All-rounders Marizanne Kapp (29 runs off 17 balls) and Annabel Sutherland (41* runs off 35 balls) forged an undefeated 58-run partnership for the fourth wicket, however, to give the Delhi Capitals Women the victory in a thrilling final over. Sutherland was declared the Player of the Match (POTM) after taking two wickets while bowling. Here is what the POTM and captains had to say in the interim.
Who Said What?
Losing skipper, Deepti Sharma
“We lost back-to-back wickets, otherwise the total could have been different. We trusted ourselves as bowling unit. We pulled it back after the powerplay. Only if we’d taken the catches; it’s part of the game, though. The result could have been different [had we taken them]. The team is doing well. Even today, 166 was a good total. We want to play good cricket as a team.”
Winning skipper, Meg Lanning
“Happy to be on the right side. Much better out there tonight. I felt I was positive from the first ball. Got my footwork going. We had some world-class players out there [in the closing stages of the chase]. I thought we were on for 200 after the first six overs! We pulled it back really nicely. Taking wickets is really important. There’s always areas to improve, but I feel this was our best performance of the tournament so far.”
Player of the Match, Annabel Sutherland
“Nice to get a win, and contribute. We did well to pull back in the bowling innings. Just reading the conditions… trying to use the longer boundary. Meg was going pretty well, then Kappy came in and was hitting the ball pretty well. I just try to find out what’s working as early as possible. It’s tough for bowlers at times. Sometimes it’s your day, sometimes it’s not.”
