On Tuesday, April 8, Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosted Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in IPL 2025 Match 22 at Mullanpur. Although the home team prevailed by 18 runs, the game was expected to get much closer at one point than the score indicates.
An interesting incident occurred during CSK’s chase of 220 runs. The Kiwi and CSK opener Devon Conway was playing a solid innings, anchoring one end and providing the necessary boost to the run rate when possible. The required run rate was way too high throughout the innings though and with the arrival of MS Dhoni it seemed like it might come down considerably if he gets going. He, in fact, got going and it appeared that he and Conway would be leading the team to the last ball unless they got out.
At 17.5 overs, Conway was well-established at 69 off 49 balls, thus the CSK management chose to retire him and replace him with Ravindra Jadeja. Many viewers and supporters were perplexed by the choice and posted their amazement on social media. When the club opted to bring Conway back into the dugout, fans began to speculate that they likely wanted new hands and legs in the middle for the final two overs.
Jadeja, however, could not do much as he ended up at 9 off 5 balls. CSK had a lot on their plate and they lost their fourth match of the season out of five played.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, captain of CSK, explained Devon Conway retirement after the game.
“Devon really is a ball timer. near the top of the order, really helpful. Jaddu, you are aware that the batsman is having difficulties, and his function is very different. When Gaikwad felt it was essential, we changed after waiting for him to time it.
There have already been two players retired from the IPL 2025. The first was against the Lucknow Super Giants and was played by Tilak Varma. Divergent views were generated by his retirement, and Conway’s is expected to be no different.
