Glenn Maxwell brought Punjab Kings back together in time for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2025. But as far as his batting performances are concerned, the change in base hasn’t been accompanied by a change in luck. In recent years, the Australian team has seen some incredible knocks from the all-rounder. His recent IPL performance, however, is a perfect example of mediocrity.
As a point of comparison, Maxwell amassed 52 runs in 10 IPL 2024 games. Prior to this year’s massive auction, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) released him. For INR 4.20 crore, the 37-year-old was then signed by Punjab Kings. This sum is significant in a mega-auction, particularly for a player who has fluctuated greatly in the majority of his seasons in the illustrious league.
The IPL 2012 was the first time Maxwell participated in the competition. He only missed the tournament’s 2019 edition. The Melbourne native has participated in the lucrative event for at least ten games in ten of the twelve seasons outside of this one. Nevertheless, he has only scored 400 runs or more in three seasons.
Maxwell has amassed 100 runs at a pitiful average of 6.67 in 15 innings of action since the 2024 Indian Premier League. Despite being well-known for his powerful hits and aggressive hitting style, Maxwell has only managed a strike rate of 108.69 during this time. However, his figures are significantly better for Australia in the shortest format after March 2024. At a strike-rate of 148.48 and an average of 28.00, he has amassed 196 runs from eight innings.
What makes IPL teams continue to use Glenn Maxwell, then?
Even when they’re down and out, players like Maxwell can make the opponent fearful. He can get back to his former IPL form with one strong innings. RCB had hoped for a similar comeback until the previous season, and PBKS is currently in a similar situation. Captains usually save a few overs of their best bowlers in the bank so that they can be utilised to dismiss the stalwart, even if he is having a rough period. Because they get to face bowlers that aren’t as dangerous as the spearheads, the other batters have an easier time of it.
The versatility of Maxwell’s skills may be another factor. In addition to being a great fielder, Maxwell is far more than just a part-time off-spinner, even at 37. His ability to break partnerships and take crucial wickets is remarkable. He claimed six wickets in the IPL last season at an economy rate of 8.06 and an average of 21.50. With an average of 27.50 and an economy rate of 8.46 for runs conceded, he has taken four wickets in the 2025 Indian Premier League.
