The final phases of the Asia Cup 2025 match between India and Sri Lanka at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Friday, September 26, saw some chaos as Dasun Shanaka escaped a run-out under unusual circumstances.
India scored 202/5 in 20 overs after being allowed to bat first by Sri Lankan captain Charith Asalanka. Pathum Nissanka led the Sri Lankan innings in reply, achieving his first century in T20I cricket. However, with 12 runs needed from the final over, Harshit Rana removed him.
Dasun Shanaka scored a couple of runs with the penultimate ball of the over to tie the game and send it to the Super Over. Arshdeep Singh produced a full delivery wide outside off-stump, and Shanaka swung his bat only to find thin air. The Sri Lankan all-rounder attempted a bye, but Kamindu Mendis did not cross for a run. Sanju Samson calmly under-armed the ball onto the stumps and striker’s end, catching Shanaka well short of his crease.
Sri Lanka had already lost a wicket off the opening delivery, and Shanaka’s runout would have ended the innings. The leg umpire raised his finger to indicate the run out. However, Arshdeep Singh requested a caught-behind, and the umpire ruled him out at the striker’s end. Shanaka immediately requested the DRS, knowing he had not nicked the delivery.
According to the DRS, Dasun Shanaka’s bat was not in contact with the ball.
He was still not out. However, he was not allowed to run out. This is because, according to the regulation, once a batter is given out, what happens thereafter is irrelevant. As a result, when the umpire threw Shanaka out for being caught behind the ball, he died. The runout, which occurred, was eventually overlooked.
According to Rule 20.1.1.3, a ball is declared dead when the hitter is dismissed. “The ball will be deemed to be dead from the instant of the incident causing the dismissal,” according to it.
Also, rule 3.7.1 stipulates that if an original decision of Out is amended to Not out as a result of a Player Review request, the ball is still considered dead at the time of the original decision.
Shanaka was dismissed off the following delivery as Sri Lanka only managed two runs in the Super Over. Suryakumar Yadav took three runs off the first ball bowled by Wanindu Hasaranga to take India to victory. The Men in Blue will now have a break on Saturday before they face Pakistan in Sunday’s final.
