Women's T20 World Cup 2024: How Teams qualified

The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 is rapidly approaching, with ten countries scheduled to play 23 matches in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to compete for the title. The competition is scheduled to begin on October 3 at Sharjah Cricket Stadium with Bangladesh taking on Scotland. It will continue until the final on October 20 at Dubai International Stadium.

Here, we examine how each of them achieved qualification for the 2024 Women’s : T20 World Cup

Before the tournament was shifted to the United Arab Emirates, Bangladesh qualified as hosts. This will be their sixth appearance in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. They still haven’t advanced past the group stage.

Thanks to their performances at the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa, six teams have qualified.

Australia maintained their dominance by defeating the hosts by 19 runs at Newlands Cricket Ground, lifting the trophy for a record sixth time. Since being defeated by India in their first group encounter of the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, the Australians have won all six of their games in the competition.

That was South Africa’s first-ever final, and they’ll be hoping for even greater results when the action moves to Sharjah and Dubai. In the meantime, England, the 2009 champions, qualified after defeating the host country in the semi-finals in South Africa. The English have lost three times in the championship match since winning the trophy fifteen years ago.

India was the other eliminated semifinalist; they lost to Australia in a thrilling match in Cape Town by a mere five runs, thus missing out on a second straight final. However, after defeating Pakistan and Ireland in Group 2, the 2016 champion West Indies were among the teams that placed third in their group.

New Zealand, finalists in 2009 and 2010, finished third in Group 1 and qualified with convincing wins over Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Pakistan also advanced by finishing as the second-highest team in the ICC Women’s T20I Team Rankings at the end of February 2023. They are still not in the semifinals.

Through the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier in May, two teams secured their spots. This includes Sri Lanka, who in 2023 upset the home team, South Africa, in the tournament’s opening match before going on to place fourth in Group 1 based on net run-rate. Prior to securing their berth in the qualifier, Sri Lanka defeated the UAE by 15 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi, having won all four of their Group A matches.

Scotland is the lone team participating in the competition for the first time, and they had to advance past the Netherlands, Italy, and France in the 2023 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Europe Qualifier. They advanced to the global qualifier by winning five of their six games. There, they placed second in Group A, behind Sri Lanka, and created history by defeating Ireland, the winners of Group B, by 54 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium.
