Amol Muzumdar, India Women’s head coach, has praised the Women’s Premier League (WPL) for having a huge impact on Indian players’ thinking and mentality. The Indian Premier League (IPL), which debuted in 2008, altered the men’s white-ball setup, with early exposure to high-pressure conditions facilitating uncapped players’ smooth transition from local to international cricket.
Though the WPL only started in 2021, Muzumdar says its impact is already noticeable. Over the last 12 to 18 months, the Indian women’s team has improved significantly, competing strongly against top teams including as Australia and, most recently, winning their first bilateral T20I series in England. Muzumdar expressed hope about the team’s future and hailed the growing calibre of home cricket.
“The WPL has played an important role in the players’ development. There is no doubt about that. However, there are other events in India that we should look at. The Week quotes Muzumdar as saying, “There are so many domestic players playing.”
“WPL is only one of the BCCI’s initiative. So, I believe the WPL has had a successful hunting season. However, there are other tournaments that are equally important,” he continued.
