Former cricketers AB de Villiers and Aaron Finch discussed the South African team’s potential and challenges against Australia in the ICC World Test Championship Final. South Africa’s involvement in the Final, according to de Villiers, is a watershed moment in South African cricket, and the Proteas lineup is well-balanced.
“This is a historic moment in South African cricket—a final at Lord’s. “The entire country will be behind our team, and we hope to cross the finish line,” de Villiers stated on Star Sports. “I’m thrilled about the challenge. It’s a well-balanced team, and I’m quietly optimistic we’ll surprise Australia—I say ‘upset’ because they’re definitely the favourites in this ICC World Test Championship Final.”
The former Proteas player described Australia as a “very experienced and well-oiled machine,” implying that South Africa will face a difficult challenge.
“Australia is a highly seasoned and well-oiled team. It will not be simple for South Africa. But I’m quietly confident because we’re going with many in-form players and big-hearted men who want to establish themselves on this platform,” he remarked.
AB De Villiers also mentioned that the Final was many of these players’ first match at Lord’s, and he hoped they would adjust soon.
“For many of these players, this will be their first match at Lord’s; ideally, they will adjust fast. But I am definitely looking forward to this contest. It’s going to be wonderful cricket—after all, it’s the final, and both teams have earned their spot.”
Finch lauded the experience of both South African and Australian bowling attacks, noting that the team who can adjust swiftly to the situation will win.
“There is certainly a challenge with teams who haven’t had considerable Test cricket preparation. However, both teams—particularly their bowling attacks—have extensive experience. In many ways, coming in fresh could benefit both parties. Ultimately, it may depend on whose team settles faster in the Test match.”
He also praised Australia’s ability to perform well in a one-off encounter, pointing out that the team has always excelled under pressure.
“The opening day will most likely set the tone for the entire match. Performing in one-off games necessitates specific qualities, and Australia has repeatedly demonstrated their capacity to peak at critical points in competitions. Although this is a single Test match, their experience from winning the previous World Test Championship Final offers them an advantage. It should make for an excellent competition.”
