'Toh abhi karlenge poore potential ko use' - Suryakumar Yadav gives a witty response to Gautam Gambhir's previous remark

It is commonly known that Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian team, and Suryakumar Yadav, the captain of the T20I team for the Sri Lankan tour, have known each other for ten years, since 2014. At that point, Gambhir was captaining the Kolkata Knight Riders, who had acquired Surya.

During a recent conversation, Gambhir discussed the perfect leadership role and shared a noteworthy regret from his seven years as KKR captain. During his tenure with the team, he bemoaned the fact that neither he nor the team were able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav’s potential, blaming this deficiency mainly on team configurations and tactical limitations.

Finding and showcasing the greatest potential is the responsibility of a leader. If there’s one thing I regret from my seven years as captain, it’s that neither I nor the squad was able to fully utilise Suryakumar Yadav. Combinations were the cause, Gambhir had told Sportskeeda.

Meanwhile, a reporter brought up Gambhir’s previous comments in passing during the pre-match press conference on the eve of today’s first Twenty20 International match, as they were talking about their close relationship. Surya responded with a particularly clever rejoinder, telling them not to worry, that the potential will now be completely realised, and that it was never too late to attain it.

“We will now fulfil that potential, toh abhi karlenge poore ko use,” grinned Suryakumar, as reported by NDTV Sports.

Nothing alters; the cricket brand stays the same: Suryakumar Yadav

After retiring, Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the shortest format changed, and Suryakumar explained how things should go going ahead. He used a powerful comparison, comparing the change in leadership to replacing an engine and the train bogies to the narrow-minded mentality. Surya highlighted that even with this adjustment, the fundamentals of captaincy were still the same—they were just given more responsibility. He expressed optimism that he would be able to truly live up to the expectations and promises that come with his new responsibilities in this higher post.

“The train will go as planned; the only modifications are to the engine and the bogies. Cricket stays true to its brand; nothing changes. Not much changes in relation to the captaincy job. I now have more responsibilities as a result of it. That I can now “walk the talk” is a positive thing, Suryakumar continued.

After India won the World Cup in the Americas, Rohit withdrew from T20 international cricket. In his place, the squad took an aggressive and revolutionary tack, departing from the tactical plan that had been put in place for the 50-over World Cup played in India last year.
