Former cricketer Yograj Singh has spoken out in support of India head coach Gautam Gambhir, claiming that he should not be ridiculed because he is performing his duties successfully. Under Gambhir’s leadership, India defeated England by 336 runs in the second Test at Edgbaston, their first Test victory at the renowned stadium in all of their previous encounters.
Prior to this victory, the Shubman Gill-led team had suffered criticism for a poor performance in red-ball cricket, and Gambhir was under heavy scrutiny.
However, Yograj Singh believes the latest triumph has silenced the sceptics and expressed faith that India will return home with a series victory.
“Indian players are always developing and upgrading their games. We will always support them. We shouldn’t talk about Gautam Gambhir since he’s performing well. Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, and Rahul Dravid are giving back to cricket because they have got so much,” Yograj stated, as reported by NDTV Sports.
“Even if our team loses the series, we should not discourage them. If you lose, you will not be present to explain; if you win, you are not required to explain. We hope to win the series under Shubman Gill’s captaincy,” he added.
Gambhir found himself under the radar following the Indian national side’s inconsistent run of form in the longest format of the game, particularly after their five-wicket loss to England in both teams’ opening match of the 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle at Headingley, Leeds. While the 43-year-old has already made a mark in white-ball format with a Champions Trophy victory, questions were raised about his ability to instil similar aggression in red-ball internationals.
India had lost seven of their previous nine Test matches, including a 0–3 whitewash at home against New Zealand, a 3–1 series defeat in Australia, and the recent loss in Leeds. However, they also showed flashes of brilliance, dominating Australia with a commanding 265-run win in Perth during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and narrowly avoiding defeat in Brisbane with the help of weather interruptions.
With momentum on their side after a historic win at Edgbaston, India will be eager to carry their winning form into the third Test at Lord’s, starting Thursday, July 10.
