Even though Jasprit Bumrah is one of the most deadly bowlers in the latter stages of a Twenty20 match, the seasoned pacer has admitted that he prefers to use the new ball and take advantage of any swing that is present in the first few overs.
In the game’s shortest format, bowling at the death is an important element. In T20 cricket, picking wickets with the new ball is not as important. But other bowlers, like Bumrah, can significantly restrict the opposition’s ability to score runs with the new ball. On Thursday, April 18, Mumbai Indians vs. Punjab Kings at Mullanpur, the 30-year-old shared the new ball with Gerald Coetzee and got rid of Sam Curran and Rilee Rossouw in his opening over. After returning later in the innings to remove the crucial wicket of Shashank Singh, Bumrah concluded with remarkable figures of 3/21 in four overs.
Following his effort that earned him the Player of the Match title, Bumrah stated that he prefers to bowl in T20 cricket with the new ball and take advantage of any available swing, at least for the first two overs.
“When the ball does something, you naturally want to react quickly. For the first two overs in this arrangement, the ball most likely does swing. I play Test cricket as well, when I want to bowl more. That’s where all my wants to bowl more come from.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Jasprit Bumrah stated, “In this format, you do want to make an impact when the ball swings for the first two overs, and when the opportunity comes, I’m happy to contribute.”
With just a 5.96 economy rate thus far in IPL 2024, Bumrah has an astoundingly low rating. He now has 13 wickets for the season from seven games after his three-wicket performance against Punjab. Bumrah received the Purple Cap following the match.

Mumbai had earlier in the day amassed 192/7 after being asked to bat first by Sam Curran, the interim captain of Punjab. With an explosive 78 off 53 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, Suryakumar Yadav took the lead. Punjab was always looking down the barrel after losing four wickets in the third over, despite Ashutosh Sharma’s (61 off 28 balls) and Shashank’s (41 off 25 balls) best efforts. Eventually, they were out for 183 and lost by nine runs.
