A humorous run-out incident featuring Rohit Sharma from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2016 was recently recounted by former Indian batsman Zaheer Khan. The event happened when the Mumbai Indians and Delhi Daredevils (now the Delhi Capitals) clashed.
The Delhi Daredevils, who batted first, scored a respectable 164/4. Despite a valiant half-century from Rohit Sharma, the Mumbai Indians were confined to 154/7 and lost by 10 runs. Unfortunately for MI, Rohit was run out, ending his innings in an unusual way.
During the game, Rohit was notably batting alongside Hardik Pandya, a runner. When Hardik attempted a run, he collided with the non-striker at the bowler’s end, resulting in a costly miscommunication between the two. Rohit’s innings was prematurely ended as he was run out due to the confusion.
“Recall the time I captained the Delhi Daredevils. Our opponent was MI. In reality, Rohit was carrying the innings. From the opposing side, we made good progress and took enough wickets. I was sort of making sure until he arrived.
When he had a runner in that game, he was eventually run out,” Zaheer told Cricbuzz.
“Oh no, it’s not my fault,” he said. The runner was out and out when the non-striker collided with him, but he insisted that he wasn’t. How can you not run out? I asked. We often giggle about that episode, he continued.
Regarding Rohit’s record in the Indian Premier League, he debuted with the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in the inaugural 2008 season. Rohit left the team after three seasons to join the Mumbai Indians, where he went on to become one of the most important players in IPL history.
Rohit has participated in 272 IPL games thus far, scoring 7,046 runs at a strike rate of 132.09 and an average of 29.73. Two hundred and forty-seven half-centuries are included in his total. 2013 was his most successful batting season, scoring 538 runs from 19 games at a remarkable average of 38.42 and a strike rate of 131.54, including four fifties.
Beyond his individual stats, Rohit has been instrumental in making the Mumbai Indians one of the league’s most successful teams. MI won five IPL championships under his direction, solidifying his reputation as one of the best captains and players in IPL history.
