Kundai Matigimu has been fined 15% of his match earnings for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct on Day 1 of the second Test between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
Matigumu fielded the ball off his own bowling and forcefully flung it towards the stumps at Lhuan-de Pretorius’ end in the 72nd over. However, the imprecise throw struck the left-handed batter, who had wrist injuries as a result of the impact.
Kundai Matigimu was judged to have violated Article 2.9 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel.
The statute is related to “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment) at or near a player in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during an International Match.”
The 27-year-old admitted the crime and accepted the penalty, so there was no need for a formal hearing. Ranjan Madugalle of the International Cricket Council’s Elite Panel of Match Referees took the disciplinary punishment.
The right-arm pacer received one penalty point on his disciplinary record. It was his first infraction in the last 24 months (two years). Matigimu made his international debut for Zimbabwe in the second Test of the two-match series.
The Proteas, especially backup skipper Wiaan Mulder, dominated the opening day of play. South Africa finished the first day with 465 runs from 88 overs, with Mulder adding 264. The all-rounder resumed his marathon the next day, declaring at lunchtime with a record undefeated 367 off 334 deliveries.
On the other hand, Zimbabwe’s first innings was wrapped up quite quickly as they were bundled out for 170 in 43 overs. Sean Williams (83* off 55) served as the lone warrior for the hosts in an otherwise disappointing display of batting from the rest of the squad.
