At Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday, the Delhi Capitals lost to the Mumbai Indians by a heartbreaking eight runs in the WPL 2025 Final.
With two wickets apiece from Marizanne Kapp, Jess Jonassen, and N Charani, the Mumbai Indians were held to 149/7 in 20 overs. The home team then restricted the Delhi Capitals, who were playing in their third straight WPL final, to 141/9 in 20 overs.
Head coach Jonathan Batty remarked after the defeat, “We’ve finished at the top of the table and had three fantastic seasons.
Even though we’ve played some amazing cricket, everyone is currently injured. You should bet on yourself to reach 150 runs on that wicket 99 percent of the time, but Mumbai deserves all the praise for their bowling and strategy.
“It was such a close game to lose by only eight runs, which is basically two boundaries,” Batty went on. In the end, we lost by two balls. Either way, it could have happened. There’s always going to be a victor and a loser, and regrettably, we lost for the third time.
The difference was created by Sciver-Brunt’s score: Crazy
The Mumbai Indians got off to a rough start, dropping a few early wickets. However, Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain, and Nat Sciver-Brunt anchored their innings with an 89-run partnership. Nat Sciver-Brunt contributed 30 off 28 for their team, while Kaur hit 66 off 44.
“Nat Sciver-Brunt had an amazing tournament, scoring over 500 runs, and Harmanpreet was fantastic,” Batty remarked, praising the opposition. The difference between the two sides today was determined by her innings.
The Englishman also praised Meg Lanning, the captain of the Delhi Capitals. “She’s been outstanding. For three years, Meg has been an excellent captain, guiding this amazing team of footballers. She has occasionally performed really well during the competition,” he said.
