At the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, Delhi Capitals (DC) restricted Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a meager first-innings score of 127 runs. On Thursday, April 20, the two franchises squared off in match 28 of the ongoing IPL 2023.
David Warner, captain of DC, won the coin and elected to field first. Notably, KKR announced four lineup changes since their previous match. For the match, Litton Das, Jason Roy, Kulwant Khejroliya, and Mandeep Singh were included in the lineup.
In contrast, DC elected to deploy veteran pacer Ishant Sharma and wicketkeeper-batsman Phil Salt.
Despite KKR’s substitutions, the decision appeared to have backfired as DC completely dominated them throughout the first inning.
Jason Roy and Litton Das, both making their KKR debuts, managed only 15 runs between them before the latter was dismissed for only four runs. The KKR batting order collapsed like a house of cards as they were reduced to 70/6 in less than 12 overs.
Kuldeep Yadav dismissed Jason for 43 off 39 deliveries, despite his valiant efforts to score boundaries and keep the innings steady with big runs. Ultimately, Jason succumbed to pressure and was dismissed for 43 off 39 balls. Impact Player Anukul Roy fell victim to the left-arm spinner’s second successful delivery in the very next delivery.
Before being replaced by Prithvi Shaw, Ishant Sharma took two wickets and posted impressive bowling figures of 2/19 in his four. Ishant took his first wicket in the IPL after 718 days. With wickets falling at regular intervals, even the potent batsman Andre Russell was unable to completely rescue his team from the precarious situation.
Russell blasted Mukesh Kumar for 19 runs in the final over and finished with an undefeated total of 38 runs. DC restricted KKR to a meager 127 runs in their allotted 20 overs due to their disciplined bowling performance. Ishant, Kuldeep, Anrich Nortje, and Axar Patel each accounted for two dismissals.
