Commentry
Right then! It was our pleasure to bring this magnificent game of cricket to you and we hope that you all enjoyed it. That is all we have from this game, but these two teams will fight again in the third and final ODI. It will be played on 16th July at 1045 Local (0945 GMT). Do join us for that. Till then, take care and goodbye!
Andy Balbirnie, Ireland skipper, is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH, he says that he is extremely proud of the way they played. Adds that they showed character and bowled and batted really well. Says that Tector's innings was brilliant and he is really developing into a strong player. Further adds that they will have a couple of beers to celebrate the win. Adds that McBrine's innings was very important. About his batting, says that it was exciting to face the Proteas bowlers.
Temba Bavuma, South Africa skipper, says that Ireland outplayed us. Says that there is a lot of things to work on. Says that the plan was to get wickets in the first Powerplay. Adds that 100 runs in the last 10 overs, put them under pressure. Says that there were not many partnerships as well apart from the one between Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen and that put a lot of pressure on the middle order.
Earlier in the day, Ireland scored 290 as Andy Balbirnie scored a ton and Harry Tector and George Dockrell batted well towards the end. The South African bowlers had a rough day as they were taken apart by the batters. South Africa had a tough day with their fielding also as they spilled catches which they would take 9 out of 10 times. Their spinners did well but the pacers took a hammering. In the end, the total of 290 ended up more than enough as they won by 43 runs.
Ireland had a good start with the ball as Craig Young and Josh Little took early wickets. There was a solid stand between Malan and van der Dussen in the middle, that threatened to take the game away from them. But George Dockrell and Andy McBrine struck in successive overs to tilt things back in their favour. After that, Little took one and Simi Singh took the wicket of Miller to put them in firm control of the game. Their bowlers did a tidy job in the final overs to finish things off. Mark Adair, McBrine and Little took 2 wickets each. The rest of the bowlers took one and it was a team performance that won them this game! Their fielding was also top-notch and they rarely made any mistakes.
South Africa would have wanted to get a strong start but that did not happen as they lost Aiden Markram and Temba Bavuma quite early. But Janneman Malan and Rassie van der Dussen put on a good stand in the middle overs to keep them in the hunt. Unfortunately for them, Malan fell in the 33rd over for 84 and van der Dussen fell in the very next over for 49. They would have wanted a good partnership after that but Verreynne fell for 13 and the required rate kept climbing. They lost Miller and Phehlukwayo too in quick succession and things kept getting out of their control. In the end, they fell short by 43 runs.
A famous win for Ireland as they have beaten South Africa for the first time and they will remember this for a while! They were the better of the two teams and have deserved this victory. South Africa, on the other hand, had a very tough day at office and will be very disappointed with the way they played.
