Melbourne Stars beat Melbourne Renegades by 7 wickets

That's all from this game!!! Melbourne Stars continue their winning streak and now have 7 wins from the 8 games they have played. There is nothing to talk about Melbourne Renegades though. They remain winless and are in complete tatters. However, we have a double-header coming up on Saturday, the 11th of January. First up is the Sydney Thunder hosting the Hobart Hurricanes at 1810 Local (0710 GMT). It will be followed by Perth Scorchers facing off against Brisbane Heat. That match will begin at 1810 Local (1010 GMT). Until then, cheers.
GLENN MAXWELL is the MAN OF THE MATCH. He is down for a quick interview now. Says that the wicket was playing very good and they initially thought that they would be chasing 180 but the bowlers did well to pull the game back. Adds that he had the mindset of targeting the last 10 overs and cash in on them. On his face off with Dan Christian, Maxwell says that they have been teammates for a long time and they both are competitive. Adds that it is part and parcel of the game.
Earlier in the first innings, Melbourne Renegades were restricted to 168 after some brilliant death bowling from the Stars. They were on their way to a total around 180 but the flurry of wickets in the end did not let that happen and in the end, the total of 168 was not enough.
The Renegades' were excellent with the ball at the start. They picked up wickets at regular intervals. Yes, Samit Patel dropped a catch of Ben Dunk but that did not prove to be costly. They might have felt that they were on top at the end of the seventh over but then the Maxwell show started. Samit Patel was economical while Cameron Boyce took a bit of stick in his last over. The seamers would be disappointed as they were taken apart by Maxwell in the end.
Melbourne Stars' innings did not start off well at all. They lost Stoinis, the highest run-scorer of this season in the BBL so far in the first over and were 54/3 at the end in the seventh over needing still 115 runs to win. That's when Maxwell joined Larkin at the crease and then stitched a magnificent 115-run unbeaten stand to take the team home. Maxwell after a composed start showed his class as he hit his shots to all parts of the ground. One would be wondering now why he is not in the ODI squad for Australia against India. Nick Larkin played the perfect supporting role to the Big Show with a calm innings of 33 runs off 28 balls.
Wow! Maxwell. It has been all Glenn Maxwell in this chase. He has single-handedly inflicted the 8th straight defeat on the Melbourne Renegades. Top-class hitting from the Big Show. His 83 runs off just 45 balls has just killed the chase.

Tactical Time-Out has been taken. The Renegades have done extremely well to reduce the Stars to 55 for 3 and that included the big wicket of Marcus Stoinis for a duck. Samit Patel dropped a catch of Ben Dunk but that did not cost much and the bowlers have stepped up and put the Renegades on top. The men in green need Maxwell to step up again and get their team home. They still require 114 off 78 balls. Samit Patel is back into the attack. 1-0-3-1 are his figures.

The run chase is all set to get underway!!! Marcus Stoinis and Hilton Cartwright make their way out to the middle in pursuit of 169. The Renegades' players follow them out to the middle. Will they be able to defend this score? Samit Patel will bowl the first over for the Renegades.
So, with the target set at 169, will the Stars be able to chase it down? It looks very likely with their batters in form and the momentum with the table-toppers. Do join us in a while for the run chase!
The Stars were smashed around the park in the first 10 overs but made a brilliant comeback in the last 10 taking 7 wickets. They conceded just 32 runs in the last 5 overs where 200 was always on the cards. It was led by Lamichhane and Haris Rauf, with the former taking vital wickets and Rauf stopping the run-flow. Coulter-Nile also bowled well, taking two wickets in the penultimate over of the innings.
Marsh and Harris started the innings brilliantly as the former scored a half ton and the latter scored 42 runs off 32 balls. At the halfway mark, they had scored 85 runs with both still at the crease and looked set for a score of almost 200 runs. However, after that, the Stars started to make their mark. Harris cheaply threw his wicket when he was run out and Marsh also was dismissed easily. Webster came in and looked to continue and build on the momentum set up by the openers but he could not do so. All the batters that came after these three could not even cross the 20-run mark nor could they provide the blistering end an innings needs to boost its score.
What an end to the innings by the Stars this has been! The Renegades started the innings brilliantly but the Stars have pulled them back to set up a very good battle between the two Melbourne sides.

Tactical Time-Out has been taken. Melbourne Renegades raced to 85/0 in their first ten overs with Harris and Marsh looking really good but the wicket of the former has given the Stars an opening. OUT! RUN OUT! Harris has to walk back and he would be utterly disappointed with the way he has been dismissed. Full ball on off, Harris pushes it towards cover and sets off for a single. However, Cartwright is positioned exactly there and rushes onto the ball. He picks it up and throws it at the non-striker's end where he hits. Bulls eye and Harris is a goner. There was never a single on offer there and Harris would be wondering why he took that risk with his team going so well at this stage. The opening stand has been broken at 86. Toss - Melbourne Stars won the Bat flip and they choose to bowl first.
The second Melbourne Derby of the season is here. Melbourne Stars won the first one comfortably by and are in scintillating form right now, placed at the top of the table. They have a settled batting line-up and their bowling has done wonders, led by Haris Rauf who took a brilliant hat-trick in the last match. The Renegades, on the other hand, are still searching for their first elusive win and what's worse, they will be missing the services of Aaron Finch and Kane Richardson who have gone to India for the ODI series. It is heavily raining at Melbourne but the good news is that the Marvel Stadium has a retractable roof of which will be in full effect today. What will happen today? Will the Melbourne Stars continue their winning streak or will the Renegades finally get their first win?
